The Current State of Frictionless Commerce

Now, more than ever, consumers are opting for a frictionless shopping experience when it comes to ecommerce and browsing brick-and-mortar stores. This can be in the form of easy credit card payments for the on-the-go individuals, websites that load quickly and have a smooth checkout process, as well as preferring a self-checkout option in order to go on with their daily lives. Other times, shopping can be seen as a chore, and individuals simply wish to get the information they need and be done with it as quickly as possible.

Therefore, convenience is a key component of a successful business. It involves giving consumers what they want while getting rid of any roadblocks that may get in the way of a smooth transaction.

In this post, the Find Your Audience team has compiled a list of important statistics to note when it comes to the current state of frictionless commerce.

Convenience is very important for grocery shoppers

According to a report by the National Retail Federation (NRF), 63% of U.S. internet users said that convenience is very important when it comes to buying groceries. In addition, 66% of shoppers are even willing to pay more for the sake of convenience. One of the main reasons why grocery shopping is regarded as such is because stores involve frequent shopper visits. In the context of the coronavirus (COVID-19), when shoppers had to wait in line outside of store locations and within the stores themselves for the sake of checking out items, the friction between businesses and consumers were high as well. Therefore, it is integral for businesses to implement effective strategies to mitigate long wait times.

Shoppers love fast and free shipping

One of the reasons why Amazon is so successful in conducting business is because it offers a fast and free shipping option for its Prime members. In fact, according to a survey conducted by Convey, 79.8% of U.S. internet users buy items from Amazon because of this reason. Fast shipping does not only ensure that consumers get their items in a timely manner, but also, in turn, allow them to go about their lives without having to worry about the supplies that were given a guarantee to be delivered to them. For this reason, business executives should consider improving their choice of postal services, as such a small change can have a profound impact on customer satisfaction and traffic.

Online shoppers like to pick up items at the register

In another survey conducted by the NRF, it was found that internet shoppers who engaged in the click-and-collect method like to pick their items up at the register. In fact, 78% of the respondents said they have tried this method in the past, while 88% of individuals noted that they would be interested in trying as well. At the surface, it may seem as if click-and-collect is the antithesis of convenience. However, a study by Comscore noted that one of the reasons for click-and-collect is for the sake of avoiding a shipping fee. Other top reasons for why consumers prefer this method is because they are not interested in having to shop in-person for products. Of course, being assured that the items they want are available in a store before having to travel there is another reason.

When developing an effective strategy for one’s business, having the latest facts, statistics, and news on frictionless commerce is key. This requires not only thorough market research on target consumers, but also an in-depth analysis and understanding of consumer behaviour.
