Business 101: How to Deal with Burnout

When a new employee joins an organization or business, they are excited to get into their work. Deadlines get met, projects get completed with a careful nod to quality, and communication is always clear. However, as the years pass, the employee begins to lose their passion or interest in their work. No longer do they get up in the morning with the eagerness they once had. They are tired and feel as if their duties and responsibilities lack meaning. They may also not be getting enough sleep, either. This then contributes to a high level of stress, and before they know it, they have to call in sick because of either their physical or mental health.

Burnout can destroy even the most dedicated of employees, and being able to detect the early signs of it and use techniques to mitigate it is a step in the right direction. A company that has the right strategies to go against employee burnout would foster a better working environment and better business outcomes. Along with helping the professional and personal lives of employees, supporting individuals with burnout can improve the company as a whole.

One way to deal with employee burnout is to encourage a light physical activity such as yoga. By doing stretches on a consistent basis, employees can alleviate their stress. Being able to get up and move around for a bit can help individuals regain their focus as well. Encourage morning exercises or even a jog outside during a designated break. The fresh air can be helpful in terms of better health, too.

Don’t forget the power of meditation, either. If your company has an exclusive or corporate deal with a gym or yoga studio, then don’t forget to inform your employees about it. They can use their memberships to access a quiet space where they can relax and destress with breathing exercises. With a clearer mind, individuals would be better equipped to focus on the most important tasks at hand.

Another way to deal with burnout is to change the multitasking mindset for a bit, focusing on completing smaller tasks first in order to get things done as part of a bigger project. By completing one task at a time and doing it well, it ensures the quality of the work. In addition, employees can celebrate their small victories each step of the way, which encourages them to continue working towards the end goal.

Of course, encourage employees to sleep earlier or offer flexible and reasonable work hours. Fatigue can lead to high levels of stress and mistakes that can be avoided. Before going to sleep, individuals can establish a familiar routine of self care, reading a book, or even turning on a white noise application on their mobile phone to help them fall asleep more easily.

Self care also goes beyond getting a good night’s rest. Practicing it can involve a bunch of relaxing activities to destress the mind and body. Whether it’s a new skincare routine, dedicating oneself to doing some exercises, or even eating better, doing it on a consistent basis can help individuals in terms of their health.

Furthermore, encouraging employees to live their lives outside of work can help foster better friendships and better communications. In turn, employees would be happier and healthier, which can have an effect on their job performance and productivity. Being able to talk with others allows employees to brush up on their business networking skills, too, which can be leveraged to generate new leads.

Employee burnout may be scary, but with the right strategies in place, a company can help mitigate and prevent it. The end result is better quality of work, improved productivity levels, and higher employee retention.
